1. Write and submit articles . It is a the method which works. Write quality unique articles, not articles that are rehashed or provide no insight to readers
2. Write and submit press releases.
3. Write and ping blog entries. Always make sure to link back to your website with your blog posts. Try making multiple blogs and have them
all link back to one main site. However, do not annoy people by comment spam.
4. Make sure your website gets listed in DMOZ: http://dmoz.org/
5. Advertise your website in the appropriate categories at Craigslist. Try posting your ads in the most populated cities in the world.
6. If a niche related forum that you frequently visit allows signatures, then make sure to add your website url in there. Simple but effective advert, especially if you post helpful posts in the forum. Again, don't just post comments which are obviously just adding a link, but try to help other people, or make a useful contribution.

You may have seen the AddThis buttons on blogs at some point while surfing the web. It’s a simple, free widget blog owners can add to their site that shows a number of bookmarking options at the end of a blog post (there’s also a feed reader widget for easy RSS subscriptions). Readers can bookmark the post on Digg, Del.icio.us, Stumbleupon, Google Bookmarks, Bluedot and other services with a single click. As an example, we’ve added an AddThis button to the end of this post.
The service launched in October 2006 and announced that the widget was being served over 1 million times per day last month. Tomorrow they’ll announce that they’ve reached the 2 million milestone.

AddThis is gathering some very interesting data that can form the core of a business model now that they have fairly deep penetration. They’re releasing some of this data tomorrow - showing the top bookmarking services and feed readers where their users store data (see the graphs below). Given that AddThis also sees what stories people are bookmarking, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine other things they could do with all of this data.
The top bookmarking services, after the browser feature itself (”favorites”) are del.icio.us and Google Bookmarks, followed by Digg and Yahoo My Web. No surprises there. The top feed reader by a large margin is the much improved Google Reader, which is more popular than Yahoo and Bloglines combined. I am surprised at that - Recent Feedburner data suggested Google Reader was doing very well, but not as well as the AddThis data suggests.

How do I create a Blogger Feed?
Enter your blog's web address in the "Ready to Burn?" form found on FeedBurner's homepage and at the bottom of the pages in the Blog and Podcast sections. If you plan to publish a podcast with your Blogger feed, check the "I am a podcaster" box. Click Next ».
The Identify Feed Source page should appear.
On "Welcome", make sure the title and FeedBurner address (URL) of your new feed are values you prefer.
The Create or Sign In To Your FeedBurner Account page should appear.
Also on this page, create a FeedBurner account by picking a username and password and supplying your email address.
When you've supplied all the required information on this page, click Activate Feed ». A "Congrats" page should appear.
Read all of the information on "Congrats", then click Next » to continue with the setup process.

In a new browser window, sign in to your Blogger account.
From the Blogger Dashboard, click the Settings link for the blog you want to promote.
The Settings page for your selected blog should appear.
Click the Site Feed link under the Settings tab.
Type your complete FeedBurner feed address into the Post Feed Redirect URL text field. Make sure you type in your entire feed address including the "http://" portion.
Click Save Settings.

How To Set Up A Free Blog

Blogs are brilliant; they're an outlet for whatever you want to say. Whether you're interested in setting up a personal blog to be viewed by just a few friends, or want to take on the might of The Internet and put the World to rights, setting up your own unique blog is a breeze. There are two main blog providers: Blogger and Wordpress. We're going to take a quick look at each in turn so you can pick one and get up and running as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Step 1:: Blogger; Point your browser towards Blogger.com, and ‘click create your blog' now.

You need an account; because Blogger is owned by Google if you've got a googlemail or gmail account, you can use that. Otherwise, sign up for one now.

Fill in the signup form, and click ‘continue'.

Next, you'll need to pick a name for your blog. Pick something sharp and snappy that reflects what your blog is about.

Your blog's unique web address will then be http://whateveritwasyouchose.blogspot.com. You don't need to buy any hosting or webspace or anything – it's all dealt with at ‘their end'.

Next you'll need to choose a template – this is a look of your blog. Don't worry too much, you can easily change this later if you pick one that looks a bit rubbishy, but have a scan down and pick something that'll reflect the content of your blog.

Click the little button under a template's thumbnail, and then click ‘Continue'.; Woo. That's it, look. “Your blog has been created”. Click Start Posting, it's time to put your words up on The Internet.

Writing a post is as easy as writing an email. Just add a subject and body text. If you want to upload a picture too, you can with the “Add Image” button. Click it, and browse to the picture you want to upload, and click Upload. Easy.

When you're done, click Publish and whatever words of wisdom you wrote will be put on The Internet for everyone to marvel at.

Of course, at this stage, noone knows it's there yet so don't get all panicky. You'll need to let people know about your blog before you get visitors. Unless someone's typing random words dot blogspot.com into their address bar and happens to get lucky, your post isn't going to get read yet.

The Template bar lets you fiddle about with your site's look, and there are all sorts of funky settings in ‘Settings'. Why not have a click and a see what you can do?
Step 2:: Wordpress; Wordpress works in a very similar way to Blogger. Near identical, in fact. It's the same steps, albeit packaged up in a slightly different way.

Head to www.wordpress.com and select Sign Up Now. Your site will eventually be http://whateveritwasyouchose.wordpress.com<br />
Fill in all your details, pick a name for your blog, select the option to sign up for a blog and click Next >>.

Pick your blog's name, fill in the rest of the details and click “Sign Up Now”.

That's it. You're up and running. From here, you can either start a new post, change your template, or take a peek at how your site looks.

Click the option to write a new post, and you'll be taken to the Write page. Again, it's just like an email – you need a title, a body of text and an image if appropriate. Then just click Publish.

The View Site button's at the top, so you can see what you've published straight away.; Everything in blogging is editable, and nothing's permanent; you can turn off comments or make it so you can approve or ‘moderate' them if you're concerned about Spam or people writing nasty things about you.

Of course there are other free blogging websites out there, and they all do pretty much the same thing. Pick one that suits you and fits your needs.

Step 1:: Think about your blog; To publish a blog on the internet, you need blogging software to design and write your blog page, and somewhere to host your page online. A basic, free blog program that also hosts your blog for no cost will have less design tools and storage space than a paid for package, which can charge up to £10 a month. Look at other people's blogs to see what features are available, and build up an idea of what you'd like your blog to look like.
Step 2:: Choosing a blog package; If you just want to publish a basic diary or journal by yourself, then using a free, internet based blog site like blogger.com or livejournal.com will be fine. You will be limited in your publishing options, such as including photos and video, and will have a small range of page design templates to choose from. There are also some basic blog features within online community sites such as myspace.; If you want to publish a multimedia blog that includes photos, audio and video, subscribing to a blogging program that also gives you plenty of storage space to host everything. Sites such as typepad.com and squarespace.com offer more design choice for your blog and the chance to create multiple blogs on the same web address.
Step 3:: Setting up your blog; In this example, we are creating a blog using the basic and free blogger.com. Click on the create blog now button. Fill in the personal details page, and then click continue. The next page asks you to choose a title and web address for your blog. Your web address will need to be unique, so be prepared with a few options for if someone has already used your first choice. Click continue. You will be offered a choice of templates for your blog page. Choose whichever jumps out at you, as you can always change your choice of template later. Click continue. You have now created your blog, click on start posting to publish your first blog entry.
Step 4:: Posting an entry; A blog entry reads on the page like a newspaper article, with a headline and then a body of text underneath. Write a title into the title box, and then write your blog in the text box below. You can edit the formatting of the text using the text box toolbar, much like an e-mail. Before you publish your entry, type in a few keywords describing the content of your blog into the labels box, helping potential readers to find your blog through an internet search. Once you are happy with your blog, click on publish.
Step 5:: View your blog; Click on the view blog link to see your newly published blog on the internet. You will also be able to find your blog through blog search engines, like Google Blog and Blogger Search

Selling on eBay is a notoriously easy process, but there are many options you can take to get the best price out of the item you are selling. This video shows you the best way to maximize profit, and how to get started as an eBay entrepreneur.

Step 1:

You Will Need

A computer with an internet connection
Items to sell
A digital camera
And your credit card or bank details

Step 2:

Open an account

Click 'Register' at the top of the page. Fill in the details required and follow the on screen instructions. Once your account is up and running you must register as a Seller. Click on 'Sell' and fill in the relevant details. You will need to enter your credit card and bank details, so make sure you have them to hand.

Step 3:

Test it out

Get to grips with eBay by buying a couple of small items. This will give you a better understanding of the mechanics of the site and more importantly, give you positive feedback from buyers that future customers can use to establish that you are a trustworthy seller.

Type your item into the sell box, and then click onto the category that most fits your item. For example, if you are selling a Teddy Bear, but do not know the name of the manufacturer, you would enter Dolls and Bears> Bears> Other Bears.

Step 4:

Write an auction title

An accurate, descriptive title for your item is important, as it will be the first thing buyers see when your auction comes up in their search page. Ebay's search tool prioritises the words in auction titles over words in the description text, so by including as many key words as you can in your title you should appear near the top of people's searches. A good title for selling a Teddy Bear might be "LOVELY OLD TEDDY BEAR, HAPPY SMILE"

You can supplement with a subtitle if you wish.

Step 5:

Write an item description

Fill in the relevant details for your item on the eBay checklist. Then write a full item description. This is your sales pitch, and is key to making a buyer interested in your item, but remember to stick to the truth.
There are other boxes like 'New or Used', or 'Type', which invite you to define your item a bit further. It is worth clicking on these, as they will help your item come to the surface in people's searches.

Step 6:

Photos

Adding photos of your item will help potential buyers see exactly what they are buying. A good photo can make a huge difference to the price your item sells for, so make sure you get the photo in focus, and that it is not over or underexposed.
The first photo is free, but for more than this, eBay charges a small fee per photo. If you are selling a high value item, like a car or good piece of furniture, then it is worth paying for extra photos that show the item off in extra detail. Lots of people take the time to include photos that detail the provenance of an item.

Step 7:

Choose auction length

You will be given the option of having your item listed for 1, 3, 5, 7, or 10 days, depending on how fast you want to make a sale. For a small fee you can schedule your listing to start at a specific time in the future rather than straight away. Click sell to reach the next page.

Step 8:

Pricing options

There are a variety of pricing structures that you can choose. A basic auction is when you set a starting price and then let potential buyers bid against each other. You have the option of placing a ‘reserve' bid if you don't want a very valuable item to go for a low price.

The 'Buy It Now' feature allows you to set a final selling price, giving a buyer the opportunity to buy instantly instead of bidding. As soon as a bid is placed the 'Buy It Now' option is removed. This forces the buyer to act fast, working for a quicker sale, at an assured price for you.

Alternatively you may wish to bypass the auction approach altogether and sell by setting a fixed price. This allows for an immediate sale and is a better option if you have multiple, identical items. You can also choose to let buyers give you 'best offers' for your consideration. You need to have a good feedback score for eBay to let you sell this way.

Step 9:

Choose payment methods

Specify which payment methods you wish to use. Paypal is owned by eBay, used by most eBay buyers and sellers and is very safe, but you can also offer other methods, such as credit cards, cheques and banker's drafts.

Step 10:

Postage and packing

Do some research before you enter how much extra you are going to charge for postage and packing. If you are selling a large or heavy object the price may be more than you think, and you could cost yourself money. Small, light items can be posted at little cost, but large items such as furniture would probably be something that someone should come and collect in a van.

Step 11:

Upgrade your listing

Make your listing stand out from the others by upgrading it. For set fees you can display the title in Bold, add a subtitle, highlight the listing, add a border or a combination of these. Statistically, upgrading your listing does increase the final sale price.

Step 12:

Fees

Even if you do not choose to add photos or upgrades to your listing, eBay will charge you two fees. The first will be an insertion fee ranging from 15 pence to 3 pounds, depending on how much you are asking for your item. The second fee is the 'Final Value Fee'. This is a percentage, starting at 5.25% and rising for larger sales, that is charged on the final value of your item once it has been sold.

Step 13:

Monitor your sale

The 'My eBay' feature allows you to track the bidding on your items, and answer any questions potential buyers may ask you. You may start to have second thoughts about selling your item during the sale period. If so, you can withdraw your item at any time, as long as no one has bid on it.

Step 14:

Completing your sale

Once the listing ends, eBay will put you in contact with the buyer via e-mail, where you will be able to arrange payment and delivery. Always collect payment before you ship the item. Once the sale is complete, remember to leave feedback about your buyer, and they will do the same for you.

Buying hosting is the easiest thing in the world. It's just like buying a pair of shoes or Back to the Future Special Edition DVDs off The Internet, but instead of an actual, physical thing arriving in the post 3-5 working days later, you're buying a share of someone else's computer for a bit.

Companies have huge ‘servers' perpetually connected to The Internet, and by buying hosting they're letting you upload whatever files you like to their hard drive so that, even when you go to bed and switch off your own PC, someone on the other side of the world can view the files necessary to read your website.

Several companies exist from which you can buy hosting; it's simply a case of rooting out a good deal.
Step 1:: What to Look At; Bandwidth - one of the main things to look at is your bandwidth allowance. If you're hoping to get a hundred million visitors each and every day, that's an awful lot of megabytes whipping back and forth from the server to their PC.

Most companies offer about the same – that's up to about 3500GB per month. Unless you're hosting large files and extraordinarily high-res photos, it's not something you really need to worry about. Most websites won't even touch that, but massive sites like VideoJug use ‘dedicated' servers because you lot watching our videos uses up an outrageous amount of information each month.

Webspace – this is the amount of physical space your files take up. It's exactly the same as your hard drive at home. Typically, hosting companies will let you ‘host' about 350GB of files, of which the files for an image-heavy site will probably only take up about 300mB. You'll be hard pushed to fill it all.

Specialist stuff – if you want to host forums or use a Wordpress blog template, the servers need to be the right sort to accommodate that. If you're very jittery about handing over money, it's worth firing off an email to check if your chosen hosting company can handle things like mySQL and php.

Downtime- all servers go down and crash every once in a while. It's worth doing a quick Google to see what people are saying about a particular hosting company, to make sure they're reliable. Put shortly: if their servers are down, so's your website. So a company with a poor track record will probably wind up doing you more harm than good.

Company Policy – if you're going to be setting up even a mildly risqué site, you should have a good read of the company's policy as to what you can and can't do. Some hosts won't let you write anything offensive, some are jittery about grotty porn, and most won't let you host anything illegal. Which is fair enough.

If everything's in the same place, it'll make things much easier in the long run. You can often get a good deal on domain names; it may well be free if you're buying hosting.
Step 2:: Blag A Freebie; If you know someone who has an account with a hosting company, there might be a special prize for referral. Both you and they might be able to blag more bandwidth or disk space if you sign up with a promotional code that they've got. So look into it; you can also ask them about their experience with that company.
Step 3:: Buy The Hosting; When you've picked a company and you're happy that your website will look spiffing on their servers, it's time to spend the money. Fill in your name, address, credit card details and all that, and you're set to go.

The Domain Name is the little www. bit you type into the address bar. It's the name of your website. This film explains how you should pick it, and how to buy it.

Your domain name is what your website is called. It's the bit that people type in the address bar after all the www's to visit your gloriously-designed homepage, so make sure you think long and hard about what you're going to call it.
Step 1:: Picking A Name; It needs to be memorable, and easy. You don't really want to be changing it once you're up and running and people are becoming familiar with your site, so make sure it clearly sums up exactly what your website is and does.

Here's a good trick – imagine yourself telling someone what your website is, and if it could possibly be misconstrued in any way. You'd have to explain www.DotCottonsDotMatrix.com in horrendous, bumbling detail for example. It'll take too long, and they'll probably jot it down wrong on the other end of a phone. So keep it clean, crisp and clear.

Also, if your domain is more than one word, make sure the words don't overlap: www. Pen Island .com looks a little bit different when written down all together in lower-case letters, for example.
Step 2:: Make Sure it's not Taken; When you're ready to buy the domain name, you'll probably find some other bugger's nicked it already. In the same way that www.google.com is taken, you'll find people have registered all sorts of crap all over The Internet. Even www.abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com is taken.

Some people even buy up domains they don't even need, and park adverts there. They'll buy mis-spelled versions of popular sites in case your big fat fingers jab the wrong keys on the keyboard, in the hopes of snaring some unsuspecting simpletons and earning a few pence from the advertisers. http://www.gmaespot.com/ for example is a knock-off of popular gaming site GameSpot. It's currently full of adverts for grotty porn, so probably best not go have a look-see right now.

Step 3:: Find A Company To Register It For You; All domain-registering companies are much of a muchness; you just need to hunt around for a decent price. .com domains are the most expensive, and more obscure ones like .org.uk tend to be cheaper. It doesn't matter what country you're in, and what currency you're dealing in, but it's perfectly understandable that you might want to deal with a company within your borders in case something goes wrong.
Step 4:: Spend Your Money; Bear in mind you're only buying the rights to the name at this point. You won't be able to host any of the files that make up a website, yet. For that, you'll need to watch VideoJug's ‘How to Buy Hosting' and ‘Guide to FTP and Uploading'.

You buy for a period, generally of one or two years, and you'll receive emails when your domain registration is about to expire so you can renew it and keep your website up and running.

Once you've found your company, be it 123-reg.co.uk, Servage.com or Dreamhost.com,

You'll get a password and a login through from the company, which allows you to access a control panel. From here, you can normally change the ‘holding page' which is the page that lets people know that domain's taken, and set up email accounts, like you@examplewebsite.com.

Once it's registered and up and running, you own the domain and can type it into your favourite Internet browser. Next step is to buy some hosting so you can set up an actual website… buy the domain and hand over your cash. It'll take some time to register, maybe up to a day but it's generally done within a few hours.

With your podcast complete, you can export it to a file. Garageband gives you the option to export the podcast either directly to iTunes or as a file elsewhere on your computer. It will always be as an AAC file, which is iTunes preferred format. Movie Maker will export as a Windows Media Audio file, which you will have to convert to an mp3 or AAC file in order for iTunes to accept it. Free software that will do this conversion can be found www.download.com and for more about downloading free software, have a look at the VideoJug film "How to find free software downloads". Once it's in iTunes, add track names and artist information and even artwork to the file in the usual way you'd rename songs.
One you have your finished podcast, you need to publish it. First, you'll actually have to get it onto the internet. If you're lucky enough to have your own website, you can upload the file to your web space using your normal FTP server. Failing that, you'll have to find a place that will store the file. One recommendation is Ourmedia.org, which works a bit like YouTube and allows you to upload audio as well as video once you've set up a free account.
Once it's online, you'll have to create an RSS feed for your recording. An RSS feed tells applications like iTunes where to find your file. You can make one simply by visiting www.tdscripts.com, where you fill in the details of your file, which is referred to as the "Enclosure" - so in the box marked "Enclosure Title", enter the name of your sound file, and so on. The file that is then generated can also be uploaded to the same place you've uploaded your sound file.
You can now enter the web address or URL of the RSS feed into a Podcast publisher like iTunes or Wippit. Simply find the upload option on your publisher of choice - in iTunes it's in the "For Podcasters" section of the Podcasts page of the iTunes store. Enter the URL of your RSS file and a the organisers of the site or service will listen to you podcast to ensure it is suitable. Have you ever watched a video with 100,000 views on YouTube and thought to yourself: “How the hell did that video get so many views?” Chances are pretty good that this didn’t happen naturally, but rather that some company worked hard to make it happen – some company like mine.

When most people talk about “viral videos,” they’re usually referring to videos like Miss Teen South Carolina, Smirnoff’s Tea Partay music video, the Sony Bravia ads, Soulja Boy - videos that have traveled all around the internet and been posted on YouTube, MySpace, Google Video, Facebook, Digg, blogs, etc. - videos with millions and millions of views.

Over the past year, I have run clandestine marketing campaigns meant to ensure that promotional videos become truly viral, as these examples have become in the extreme. In this post, I will share some of the techniques I use to do my job: to get at least 100,000 people to watch my clients’ “viral” videos.

Secret #1: Not all viral videos are what they seem

There are tens of thousands of videos uploaded to YouTube each day (I’ve heard estimates between 10-65,000 videos per day). I don’t care how “viral” you think your video is; no one is going to find it and no one is going to watch it.

The members of my startup are hired guns – our clients give us videos and we make them go viral. Our rule of thumb is that if we don’t get a video 100,000 views, we don’t charge.

So far, we’ve worked on 80-90 videos and we’ve seen overwhelming success. In the past 3 months, we’ve achieved over 20 million views for our clients, with videos ranging from 100,000 views to upwards of 1.5 million views each. In other words, not all videos go viral organically – there is a method to the madness.

I can’t reveal our clients’ names and I can’t link to the videos we’ve worked on, because YouTube surely doesn’t like what we’re doing and our clients hate to admit that they need professional help with their “viral” videos. But I can give you a general idea of who we’ve worked with: two top Hollywood movie studios, a major record label, a variety of very well known consumer brands, and a number of different startups, both domestic and international.

This summer, we were approached by a Hollywood movie studio and asked to help market a series of viral clips they had created in advance of a blockbuster. The videos were 10-20 seconds each, were shot from what appeared to be a camera phone, and captured a series of unexpected and shocking events that required professional post-production and CGI. Needless to say, the studio had invested a significant amount of money in creating the videos but every time they put them online, they couldn’t get more than a few thousand views.

We took six videos and achieved:

6 million views on YouTube
~30,000 ratings
~10,000 favorites
~10,000 comments
200+ blog posts linking back to the videos
All six videos made it into the top 5 Most Viewed of the Day, and the two that went truly viral (1.5 million views each) were #1 and #2 Most Viewed of the Week.

The following principles were the secrets to our success.

2. Content is NOT King

If you want a truly viral video that will get millions of people to watch and share it, then yes, content is key. But good content is not necessary to get 100,000 views if you follow these strategies.

Don’t get me wrong: the content is what will drive visitors back to a site. So a video must have a decent concept, but one shouldn’t agonize over determining the best “viral” video possible. Generally, a concept should not be forced because it fits a brand. Rather, a brand should be fit into a great concept. Here are some guidelines we follow:

Make it short: 15-30 seconds is ideal; break down long stories into bite-sized clips
Design for remixing: create a video that is simple enough to be remixed over and over again by others. Ex: “Dramatic Hamster”
Don’t make an outright ad: if a video feels like an ad, viewers won’t share it unless it’s really amazing. Ex: Sony Bravia
Make it shocking: give a viewer no choice but to investigate further. Ex: “UFO Haiti”
Use fake headlines: make the viewer say, “Holy shit, did that actually happen?!” Ex: “Stolen Nascar”
Appeal to sex: if all else fails, hire the most attractive women available to be in the video. Ex: “Yoga 4 Dudes”

These recent videos would have been perfect had they been viral “ads” pointing people back to websites:

3. Core Strategy: Getting onto the “Most Viewed” page

Now that a video is ready to go, how the hell is it going to attract 100,000 viewers?

The core concept of video marketing on YouTube is to harness the power of the site’s traffic. Here’s the idea: something like 80 million videos are watched each day on YouTube, and a significant number of those views come from people clicking the “Videos” tab at the top. The goal is to get a video on that Videos page, which lists the Daily Most Viewed videos.

If we succeed, the video will no longer be a single needle in the haystack of 10,000 new videos per day. It will be one of the twenty videos on the Most Viewed page, which means that we can grab 1/20th of the clicks on that page! And the higher up on the page our video is, the more views we are going to get.

So how do we get the first 50,000 views we need to get our videos onto the Most Viewed list?

Blogs: We reach out to individuals who run relevant blogs and actually pay them to post our embedded videos. Sounds a little bit like cheating/PayPerPost, but it’s effective and it’s not against any rules.
Forums: We start new threads and embed our videos. Sometimes, this means kickstarting the conversations by setting up multiple accounts on each forum and posting back and forth between a few different users. Yes, it’s tedious and time-consuming, but if we get enough people working on it, it can have a tremendous effect.
MySpace: Plenty of users allow you to embed YouTube videos right in the comments section of their MySpace pages. We take advantage of this.
Facebook: Share, share, share. We’ve taken Dave McClure’s advice and built a sizeable presence on Facebook, so sharing a video with our entire friends list can have a real impact. Other ideas include creating an event that announces the video launch and inviting friends, writing a note and tagging friends, or posting the video on Facebook Video with a link back to the original YouTube video.
Email lists: Send the video to an email list. Depending on the size of the list (and the recipients’ willingness to receive links to YouTube videos), this can be a very effective strategy.
Friends: Make sure everyone we know watches the video and try to get them to email it out to their friends, or at least share it on Facebook.

Each video has a shelf life of 48 hours before it’s moved from the Daily Most Viewed list to the Weekly Most Viewed list, so it’s important that this happens quickly. As I mentioned before, when done right, this is a tremendously successful strategy.

4. Title Optimization

Once a video is on the Most Viewed page, what can be done to maximize views?

It seems obvious, but people see hundreds of videos on YouTube, and the title and thumbnail are an easy way for video publishers to actively persuade someone to click on a video. Titles can be changed a limitless number of times, so we sometimes have a catchy (and somewhat misleading) title for the first few days, then later switch to something more relevant to the brand. Recently, I’ve noticed a trend towards titling videos with the phrases “exclusive,” “behind the scenes,” and “leaked video.”

5. Thumbnail Optimization

If a video is sitting on the Most Viewed page with nineteen other videos, a compelling video thumbnail is the single best strategy to maximize the number of clicks the video gets.

YouTube provides three choices for a video’s thumbnail, one of which is grabbed from the exact middle of the video. As we edit our videos, we make sure that the frame at the very middle is interesting. It’s no surprise that videos with thumbnails of half naked women get hundreds of thousands of views. Not to say that this is the best strategy, but you get the idea. Two rules of thumb: the thumbnail should be clear (suggesting high video quality) and ideally it should have a face or at least a person in it.

Also, when we feel particularly creative, we optimize all three thumbnails then change the thumbnail every few hours. This is definitely an underused strategy, but it’s an interesting way to keep a video fresh once it’s on the Most Viewed list.

See the highlighted videos in the screenshot below for a good example of how a compelling title and screenshot can make all the difference once the video is on the Most Viewed page.

6. Commenting: Having a conversation with yourself

Every power user on YouTube has a number of different accounts. So do we. A great way to maximize the number of people who watch our videos is to create some sort of controversy in the comments section below the video. We get a few people in our office to log in throughout the day and post heated comments back and forth (you can definitely have a lot of fun with this). Everyone loves a good, heated discussion in the comments section - especially if the comments are related to a brand/startup.

Also, we aren’t afraid to delete comments – if someone is saying our video (or your startup) sucks, we just delete their comment. We can’t let one user’s negativity taint everyone else’s opinions.

We usually get one comment for every thousand views, since most people watching YouTube videos aren’t logged in. But a heated comment thread (done well) will engage viewers and will drive traffic back to our sites.

7. Releasing all videos simultaneously

Once people are watching a video, how do we keep them engaged and bring them back to a website?

A lot of the time our clients say: “We’ve got 5 videos and we’re going to release one every few days so that viewers look forward to each video.”

This is the wrong way to think about YouTube marketing. If we have multiple videos, we post all of them at once. If someone sees our first video and is so intrigued that they want to watch more, why would we make them wait until we post the next one? We give them everything up front. If a user wants to watch all five of our videos right now, there’s a much better chance that we’ll be able to persuade them to click through to our website. We don’t make them wait after seeing the first video, because they’re never going to see the next four.

Once our first video is done, we delete our second video then re-upload it. Now we have another 48-hour window to push it to the Most Viewed page. Rinse and repeat. Using this strategy, we give our most interested viewers the chance to fully engage with a campaign without compromising the opportunity to individually release and market each consecutive video.

8. Strategic Tagging: Leading viewers down the rabbit hole

This is one of my favorite strategies and one that I think we invented. YouTube allows you to tag your videos with keywords that make your videos show up in relevant searches. For the first week that our video is online, we don’t use keyword tags to optimize the video for searches on YouTube. Instead, we’ve discovered that you can use tags to control the videos that show up in the Related Videos box.

I like to think about it as leading viewers down the rabbit hole. The idea here is to make it as easy as possible for viewers to engage with all your content, rather than jumping away to “related” content that actually has nothing to do with your brand/startup.

So how do we strategically tag? We choose three or four unique tags and use only these tags for all of the videos we post. I’m not talking about obscure tags; I’m talking about unique tags, tags that are not used by any other YouTube videos. Done correctly, this will allow us to have full control over the videos that show up as “Related Videos.”

When views start trailing off after a few days to a week, it’s time to add some more generic tags, tags that draw out the long tail of a video as it starts to appear in search results on YouTube and Google.

9. Metrics/Tracking: How we measure effectiveness

The following is how we measure the success of our viral videos.

For one, we tweak the links put up on YouTube (whether in a YouTube channel or in a video description) by adding “?video=1” to the end of each URL. This makes it much easier to track inbound links using Google Analytics or another metrics tool.

TubeMogul and VidMetrix also track views/comments/ratings on each individual video and draw out nice graphs that can be shared with the team. Additionally, these tools follow the viral spread of a video outside of YouTube and throughout other social media sites and blogs.

Conclusion

The Wild West days of Lonely Girl and Ask A Ninja are over. You simply can’t expect to post great videos on YouTube and have them go viral on their own, even if you think you have the best videos ever. These days, achieving true virality takes serious creativity, some luck, and a lot of hard work. So, my advice: fire your PR firm and do it yourself.

Step 1:

Process

Every Mac except the Mac Pro and Mac Mini feature a built in microphone, but the get the best sound quality you'll need to get an external mic. These come in two flavours - with a standard audio jack or a USB connector. Those with an audio jack will plug into audio line in on most Mac's and many PC's, while a USB microphone offers better compatibility across the board, although they can be harder to find the shops.

With your mic plugged in, you'll need to record your audio. Windows XP and Vista feature a simple program called Sound Recorder, which you'll find in the "Accessories" menu of the Programs section of the start bar. The program will let you choose your audio source and you'll see a level window to check the program is receiving sound. You can record your script by clicking the record button. Try and save each section of your script as a separate file and name them accordingly as this will make editing them easier later on. Mac users can use QuickTime to perform a similar function by selecting "New Audio Recording" from the "File" menu at the top of the screen, but as we're going to be editing the recordings in Garageband on the Mac, we may as well record into it too.

Open Garageband and select "New Podcast Episode". Once you've named it, the main program window will appear. Go to the "Track" menu at the top of the screen and select "New Track...". Choose "Real Instrument", and then in the effects menu at the bottom right of the screen, click on the "Details" option. Here you can use various effects to improve the quality of your recording. Selecting the "Gate" option will help cut out unwanted sounds when you're not speaking, while the Compressor will help balance out louder and quieter parts of your speech. When you're ready to record, make sure the correct track is selected, and hit the large red record button approximately halfway down the screen.

Whatever package you're using to record your voice, do a few test recordings to gauge the best place to sit in relation to the mic. Sitting closer will give a deeper sound, but is more likely to distort, while further away offers less distortion, but can leave you sounding literally distant. When you've picked your position, make sure you are always in roughly the same place for each take. While it's good to speak in your natural voice, bear in mind that we tend to talk in a faster and more careless way than is ideal for broadcast, so if you're doing a solo spoken piece, slow yourself down a little and pay a bit more attention to your pronunciation. The key here is that you're clear and easy to understand without sounding like your forcing yourself to be well spoken. Listen back to your test recordings to find a style you're happy with.

Don't worry about making a mistake while you're talking as this can be fixed in the edit. Just start that sentence again from a convenient point. If you're going to listen to your voice as you record it, do so through a pair of headphones as playing it back through the speakers will interfere with the recording.

When you've recorded your sections, Windows users will have a selection of files in the folder they selected to save them in, while Garageband users will have will have a series a purple blocks on the timeline of the track they selected. Each of these recorded blocks can be moved around on the timeline if you wish to re-order your recordings, and each block can be edited by dragging the start and end points of the clips around or you can cut parts out by dragging the playhead to the start of the point you want to edit out, selecting "Split" from the "Edit" menu, then doing the same at the end of the section you want to remove. This newly separated section can now be deleted. Don't forget you can add a variety of built-in effects to each track if you wish.

Windows users can perform a similar edit using Window's built in Movie Maker application, which you'll find in the Programs area of the Start bar. You can open your audio files in Movie Maker and drag them onto the audio section of the timeline and arrange them into any order you wish. You can also adjust the start and end points of the clips or use the "split" option in the "Clip" menu to cut out material as you would in Garageband.

Once you're happy with flow of your dialogue, you can add backing music and jingles to punctuate your podcast. Movie Maker users can drag jingles and stings to points between the dialogue, but will struggle to place audio behind their dialogue. Garageband users can drag songs from their iTunes library or use songs they've already composed in Garageband by clicking this button to view the Media Browser, then selecting the Audio button. Audio can be dragged onto any free track on the timeline that will accept it. The track can then be adjusted or have effects added to it in the usual way.

As tempting as it may be, just sitting down in front of your computer and pressing play and record will probably end in disaster - Podcasting and radio obviously share a lot of skills, and even the most casual and impromptu sounding radio show is planned rigorously. The trick is to not do too much. They need to know that if this thing isn't floating their boat, there will something else along in a few minutes. that's something you learn from radio - a menu at the top so you know that something else will be along soon.

Sometimes hear people talking about nothing. Audiences are interested in what you've done & you can make a connection.

It also helps if you've got "furniture" - stabs of music, etc. These make the listening experience better.

Try and keep everything down to 45 seconds. This is the audience's attention span. Hit punch line at 45 seconds.

You should also pick topics that will be relevant in the future. They aren't live, so you've got to talk about things so they won't go out of date.

We have "Stuff to include in the show" (talks us through it). Not scripted but bullet-points to get "The ball rolling".

Podcasts tend not to have scripts as they're people talking about things that they're passionate about and that works best if it's unplanned.

Don't waffle. Stick to subjects your audience will relate to.

Use strings and jingles to mark the end of one section and the start of another.

Keep jokes and stories to around 45 seconds, but don't end a discussion or argument prematurely.

Try and pick subjects that aren't too topical. Your podcast may not be listened to until some time after current events.

Plan your podcast and create a running order, but don't feel you have to stick to a script.

Put a menu that tells people what's coming up in in your podcast at the start.

Always give a podcast your all, as you never know who's listening.

Step 1:: Joining a group; You can either search for groups you are interested in or find groups on your friends profiles, and join them through that. To search for a group, click on the 'groups' option on the top left of the screen. Then click in the search groups box on the top right. Then enter a topic you wish to search for, such as 'surfing' and see if any groups come up. If you see something that takes an interest, click on it and have a look at the group homepage. If you scroll down you can find out what the group's about, how many members it has, look at any relevant photos that have been uploaded, find out who created the group and see links to other groups that are related to it.; Check out the discussion board if the group has one, and see what people have been talking about. If you like the group and want to join it, click 'join group' on the top right of the screen beneath the group's graphic. You will now be able to get involved with the group by leaving comments at the bottom on the group's wall, or by joining in with discussions. If you want other people to join the group, then click 'invite people to join this group' in the top right of the group profile. Some groups require administration approval for you to join. Once you try and join, you will have to wait for an administrator of that group to let you in. Some groups on face book are invitation only so you are not allowed to request to join these. Only an invitation from an administrator will give you access to these groups.; Once you have joined a group, it will appear in your profile, under 'groups' on the top left hand side beneath the 'face book' icon. This is where all your groups will be listed. Facebook allows you to scroll through your friends already on Facebook to choose who to invite. Once you click on them, and invite will be sent to their profile. You can enter email addresses of people not on face book who you think might want to join the group in the box below this. They will receive an email inviting them to set up a profile.
Step 2:: Setting up a group; To set up your own group click on 'groups' on the top left of your profile homepage. Then click 'create a new group'. You will then have to specify the details of your new group. Firstly the 'group name', a 'network' if you want, a description of your group - which can be as detailed or as brief as you like. Next select a category, and enter any recent news on the topic (you can always update these details later once your group is a bit more established). Enter the remaining details such as a website address, and email address, a city, and a state if you live in the US.
Step 3:: Privacy Options; There are three different privacy levels you can apply to your group.
1. You can make the group 'open' which means that everyone on face book can view the group and choose to join it if they want to.

2. You can make the group 'closed' which means that administrative approval is required for new members to join. Anyone can see the group information, but only members can see the discussion board, the wall, and photos.

3. You can make your group 'secret' which means that the group will not appear in search results or in the profiles of its members. Membership is by invitation only, and only members can see the group information, the discussion board, the wall, and photos.
Step 4:: Create Group; Once you have filled in every field, click on 'create group'. Here you can upload a photo to represent your group. Click on 'browse' and search your hardrive for a relevant photograph. Tick the box to certify that you have the rights to distribute the photo, and click 'upload picture'. Once your picture appears in the picture box on the left, click 'continue'. Facebook will take you to the members section. Here you can invite people from face book to join, or invite people who are not on face book to get on face book and join the group through their email accounts. Then click 'finish and view'. You will be taken to the homepage for your new group. You will be listed as an 'administrator' under 'admins' on the bottom right hand side.
Step 5:: Adding group administrators and officers; As the architect and creator of your group you have the right to invite other people to be an administrator along with you. Go to your group and click on 'edit group members' on the right hand side. You will then see all the people who are in the group. Simply click 'make admin' on the right of anyone's name to make them an administrator. You can also make people 'officers' of the group. Officers have no administrator privileges but their name and 'position title' are displayed on the group profile. Go back the group homepage and click on 'edit group officers'. Again you will see a list of all the members in the group. Click on anyone on the list to make them an officer.
Step 6:: Group events; If you are an administrator of a group you can invite everyone in the group to an event. This is useful if, for example, you are in a band and want to publicise a gig. So in the group profile, and click on 'create related event'. Next you have to specify the details of the event. This will establish your group as the host of the event. Fill in all the required fields - such as the event name, tagline, network, the type of event it is, a description, a date location and start time. Also include phone numbers and email addresses so people can contact you. Then specify access settings for the event. You have three choices:; 1.Make the event 'open'.
People can add themselves to the guest list and invite others to the event. Anyone can see the event information, the guest list, the wall, and photos of the event.

2. Make the event 'closed'.
Only people you invite will be on the guest list. People can request invitations. Anyone can see the event time and description, but only those invited can see the location, the guest list, the wall, and photos of the event.

3. Make the event secret.
The event will not appear in search results. Only people you invite can see the event information, the guest list, the wall, and photos of the event.; Once you have entered all the information, click 'create event'. You'll then be invited to add a picture for your event. Click 'browse' to search your hardrive for a suitable picture, tick the box to affirm you own the rights to the image, then click 'upload'. Next click 'step 3: guest list' above the picture to the right. Now select people off your friend list to invite. If you want people who are not on face book already to come, simply enter their email addresses in the box on the right. They will receive an email notifying them of their invite and they will be invited to join face book to respond. If it makes it easier, you can invite everyone in the group to the event by going to the 'edit guest list' section and click on 'invite members'. You can also message everyone in your group by going to the group homepage and clicking 'message all members'. Simply enter a subject, and fill out the content of the message. Then click 'send' to send it to all group members.
Step 7:: Group discussion board; There is a discussion board on the group profile that allows members to chat about various topics associated with the group. As an administrator, you can turn the discussion board on or off in the 'edit group profile' page. There is an option to turn the discussion board on or off. You can also change the settings from 'open ' to 'closed' or 'secret' which will restrict people from using the discussion board.
